The Indian Railways is set to starts its green journey with India’s first compressed natural gas (CNG) powered train being flagged off by Rail Minister Suresh Prabhu on January 13.
This train is running on dual fuel (diesel and CNG) in Rewari-Rohtak section of northern zone. During the launch of the Railway minister Suresh Prabhu announces another CNG train between Rewari to Bikaner in rail budget 2014-15. This will be a great revolution towards the use of unconventional energy and no need to depend on conventional energy fully. It is environment friendly too.
Through fumigation technology Indian railway has modified the 1400 HP engine to run on dual fuel –diesel and CNG.Due to use of CNG fuel emission rate will be less as carbon emissions by 90%, carbon dioxide by 25%, nitrogen oxide by 35%, non-methane hydrocarbon emissions by 50% as well as operating cost also will decrease by 50%.
The train is manufactured by the integral coach factory in Chennai with CNG conversion kit being supplied by Cummins.It consists two power cars and six car coaches. TO start the engine I Initially to start the engine it needs 10% of CNG and 90% of diesel as well as the engine started running then it needs a mix. Of 60% of CNG and 40% of diesel. Operation of the train as same as a diesel engine. it can go up to 100kmph.
