” Kanpur ideally suited for Metro Rail service”
Kanpur is the largest city in Utttar Pradesh followed by Lucknow and Ghaziabad . Kanpur metro has two phases.
- From IIT Kanpur – Naubasta.
- Jarauli – agricultural university.
Phase 1 consists of 22 stations which are spread over a distance of 24 Km. If phase 1 construction would have been started in 2016 then we could expect to have a ride on the Kanpur metro by 2020.
The first station would be constructed near IIT on GT Road and the last station at Naubasta. The entire city would be covered. The team decided that out of 24-km metro route, 16 kms would be elevated and on the remaining route, the train would run underground.
Commencing its journey from IIT-K, metro train would run over the elevated platform till Harsh Nagar. This is an 8-km long stretch and have nine stations, including IIT and Harsh Nagar stations. From Chunniganj, the metro would run underground. It would pass through the parade, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, Phoolbagh, Nayaganj, Kanpur Central and Ghantaghar.
From Jhakarkati till Naubasta, another 8-km stretch, the metro will run over elevated track.
Cost of construction is estimated at Rs 350 crore per km.
